Player/coach Stewart's view on derby win

A very good 3 points yesterday and a definite boost in confidence and feel-good factor winning the first derby of the season. We’ve felt some of our recent performances have deserved more in terms of results so it was nice to get this win under our belts.

We started the match strongly, creating a number of chances but just couldn’t find the net in that opening period. We were generally controlling most of the possession of the ball although some slack passing did allow Vale to put some dangerous balls into the box. Their main threat came from their pacey forwards getting in behind but our back line and Jordan (Moffat) in goals dealt with this really well throughout the contest.

Early in the second half we got our break through, Robbie Renwick picks up the ball in a wode area and drives at the defence, goes past two or three and it opens up for him to get the shot away. Robbie over the last few weeks has been unplayable at times, but just needed to add the final touch with the goals and what a time for them to come in the local derby!

He got his second after Ross Lamb wins the ball with a high press on the centre half, leaving the ball to land at Robbie's feet. He took off again and slotted another composed finish past Vale's number one to give us that nice bit of breathing space and a lead we felt we deserved.

The game did get a bit scrappy towards the end, probably due to the heat of the day and the effort put in to get our lead. We then dropped a but deeper which invited Vale to make a late attempt to get something from the game. They did get one back which made it a nervy last couple minutes but we held out for our second league win of the season.

A top performance again from the boys in every department and we will keep working hard to make sure we meet that standard week in week out.
