We went into this match with confidence following a run of decent results in the previous few weeks and we felt we started the game well, probably dominating the opening 15/20 minutes or so. But towards the end of this period, we concede a really soft goal and allow Blackburn to get a bit more into the game. We had our own chances though and although we weren’t exactly wasteful in front of goal, we could and probably should have put maybe one or two of our opportunities away. Unfortunately we concede another avoidable goal just before half time and that gives us a tough task for the second 45 minutes against a team sitting comfortably mid-table a division above us.
The message was we need to get the next goal and again we come out and start brightly but just lacked a little bit in the final third. Midway through the half we get caught chasing the goal and that leaves space for Blackburn to break and score a third with what was a pretty well taken goal to be fair.
All in all, we competed well against tough opposition and although disappointing to go out of the cup there were plenty of positives there to take into next weekend’s match against Bathgate Thistle. It was great to see Macca (Luke Maclean) back on the pitch for the last 20 minutes after almost four months out with injury and with a bit more match sharpness he could well have been on the scoresheet on a couple of occasions.
